Decreased oxygen saturation in children requires prompt and appropriate
management to prevent complications resulting from impaired oxygenation. One
of the non-pharmacological nursing interventions that has the potential to
improve oxygen saturation is the prone position; however, evidence regarding its
implementation in school-age children with pneumonia remains limited. This
study aimed to determine the effect of the prone position on oxygen saturation
among school-aged children with pneumonia at Mangusada Regional Hospital.
This study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest
approach. The sampling technique was consecutive sampling, with a total of 22
respondents. The results showed that the prone position had a significant effect on
improving oxygen saturation among school-aged children with pneumonia at
Mangusada Regional Hospital, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These findings
indicate that the prone position significantly improves oxygen saturation by
enhancing pulmonary ventilation and oxygenation. Therefore, the prone position
can be recommended as an effective non-pharmacological nursing intervention to
improve oxygen saturation in children with pneumonia and should be optimized in
nursing practice.
