Abstract

Child hospitalization in hospitals often causes anxiety among parents due to environmental
changes, invasive procedures, and uncertainty regarding the child’s condition. The length of
hospitalization is suspected to be associated with parental anxiety levels; therefore, this study
aimed to examine the relationship between the length of child hospitalization and parental
anxiety levels in the Anggrek Ward of RSUD Tabanan. This study employed a quantitative
descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of
all parents of hospitalized children in the Anggrek Ward of RSUD Tabanan, with a sample of
25 respondents selected using a consecutive sampling technique based on inclusion criteria.
Parental anxiety levels were measured using the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-State), while
the length of hospitalization was obtained from medical record data. Data were analyzed using
the Spearman Rank correlation test. The results showed that most respondents experienced a
child hospitalization duration of ≥ 3 days (76.0%) and had moderate anxiety levels (64.0%).
Mild anxiety was reported by 32.0% of respondents, while severe anxiety was reported by 4.0%
of respondents. The Spearman Rank correlation analysis revealed a strong and positive
relationship between the length of child hospitalization and parental anxiety levels, with a
correlation coefficient of r = 0.788 and a p-value < 0.001 (α = 0.05). These findings indicate
that longer hospitalization is associated with increased parental anxiety due to heightened
psychological burden and concern for the child’s health condition. In conclusion, there is a
significant relationship between the length of child hospitalization and parental anxiety levels
in the Anggrek Ward of RSUD Tabanan.
