Pain is one of the most common complaints experienced by patients following an appendectomy due to tissue injury and the postoperative inflammatory response, which may hinder early mobilization, reduce patient comfort, and delay the recovery process. Although pharmacological therapy remains the primary approach to pain management, patients often continue to experience pain, making complementary interventions necessary. Cryotherapy, as a non-pharmacological therapy, can help reduce pain by suppressing the inflammatory response and slowing nerve impulse conduction, thereby improving pain control, enhancing patient comfort, promoting early mobilization, and accelerating postoperative recovery. This study aimed to determine the effect of cryotherapy on pain intensity among post-appendectomy patients at Payangan General Hospital, Gianyar. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 25 respondents were selected using the consecutive sampling technique. Pain intensity was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the application of cryotherapy with an ice gel at a temperature of 10–15°C for 15 minutes. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the mean pain intensity decreased from 5.08 ± 0.759 to 2.12 ± 0.725. The Wilcoxon test yielded a Z value of -4.914 and a p-value of 0.000, indicating that cryotherapy significantly reduced pain intensity among post-appendectomy patients. Cryotherapy reduces pain intensity through local vasoconstriction, decreased inflammatory responses, and slowed nerve impulse conduction, thereby reducing pain stimuli in the surgical area.
